Freewrite postbox12/28/2022 ![]() ![]() Whether writing on my iPhone and only having it last till the afternoon, or writing on my laptop while traveling and only getting a few hours of battery life before I had to shut down and find a plug. I also loved the idea of batteries that lasted a year, particularly as that had been the bane of my writing life: dead batteries. I’m a bit of a technophile, but I’m also a bit of a Luddite, so discovering this old tech that still had a loyal following (and which retained all of its functionality despite the passing of years) really intrigued me. So instead I went ahead and bought two AlphaSmart Neos (and no, the irony is not lost on me). I figured the Freewrite was an expensive toy-a gimmick-and I was a serious writer who had no need of such toys. I also (secretly) reserved the opinion that the only people who would really buy the Freewrite were pretentious hipsters and kitschy wannabe writers with money to burn. I certainly didn’t subscribe to that philosophy (though I could see its merits), so I decided the Freewrite wasn’t for me. I had decided that not including arrow keys for editing was a serious blunder (something I could not live without), and I had secretly reserved the opinion that the folks at Astrohaus were pretentious pricks who created a device to suit their own idiosyncratic philosophy on writing. #Freewrite postbox updateI had recently acquired Scrivener for my iPad/iPhone (I had used it earlier on my MacBook and fell in love with the software), so I purchased the mobile version and was very happy using that to outline my second novel (and update the synopsis for my fantasy series).ĭuring this time, I continued to read the periodic reviews about the Freewrite. Suffice it to say that I was using my MacBook to edit my first book, but while waiting on further revision notes, I decided to start writing my second novel. At this point, I was in the middle of doing revisions for my publisher (well, I was *attempting* to do revisions, but that’s a completely different story so I won’t dive into it here). I wanted to form my own opinion, though, so I did a ton of research. I heard all praise, all the hype, all the hate, and all the criticism. ![]() I originally heard about the Freewrite after Astrohaus began delivering them to their Kickstarter backers. I'm going to slip a congratulations in here on what sounds like a quite successful launching of your career! Assuming ebook versions will become available, I will certainly be interested to read your work, as I have others here. Justin_T_Call edited this topic 53 months ago. If you’re curious or want to support my books in anyway, the first book is called MASTER OF SORROWS, and it is the first novel in THE SILENT GODS tetralogy.Īnd on to my review of the Freewrite (and its comparison to the AlphaSmart Neo)! I’m going to break this up in chunks since there is a lot to say and I’ll probably keep adding to this as I learn more about my writing process and what I like (or don’t like) about the Freewrite. I’m still new to the whole process, but I couldn’t be happier. That way we can do revisions and have the second book in its final form by February/March of 2019 (when my first book hits the shelves). #Freewrite postbox seriesI’m writing my second book in the series right now and I have a deadline to finish the first draft of that book by November of 2018. We made some early sales with a certain publisher who did not live up to their contracts, and that delayed their edits for my book, which in turn pushed back the launch date for my series. I finished writing the book in 2012 as part of my master’s thesis, and I landed an agent in 2015. I spent almost twelve years writing the first draft of my first novel, and I probably would still be writing it if I han’t forced myself to get a Master’s in Literature and Creative Writing (from Harvard, no less). At the moment, I am contracted to write four books (a tetralogy) of approximately 180,000-200,000 words each. #Freewrite postbox plusMy first book comes out this February and will be published by Gollancz (Orion UK), Blanvalet (Random House Germany), plus a French and a Dutch publisher whose names I always butcher. A short bit about me for some background: ![]()
